On Wednesday afternoon a man was shot and killed near Fort Thompson after engaging federal law enforcement. FBI spokesperson Kyle Loven says the officers were seeking another suspect in the incident.

On Thursday afternoon Garreau was located in Pierre. Bob Grandpre is the Chief of Police in Pierre. He says the suspect barricaded himself in a residence in a mobile home park and officers evacuated the surrounding neighborhood before the apprehension was attempted.

"During the standoff the suspect fired several rounds at the officers and one of them struck an officer," says Grandpre. "They were non-life-threatening injuries and we did take the officer to the hospital and he was later released."

Grandpre says law enforcement successfully apprehended Garreau shortly after midnight this morning. He says the suspect is being held on a federal detainer with further state and federal charges pending.

Grandpre says the ongoing investigation is a joint effort between the FBI and state law enforcement.
