The Sioux Falls Airport is busy today with an increasing amount of stranded travelers. Travelers wanting to leave on business, vacation or even to get back home are stuck because of the weather. Richard King is the Deputy Director for the Sioux Falls Airport. He says there are no exact numbers on the amount of people stranded but he says it could be in the range of two to three thousand. King says airports across the region are playing host to stranded travelers.
"Just like every airport across the country we’ve had a lot of cancelations and delays due to the adverse weather, be it snow or cold impacts," King says. "Right now we have a number of cancelations and delayed flights in place. Most affected airports I would say are Chicago, Denver (and) Minneapolis of course."
King says some flights to warmer climates like Phoenix are still able to go. King says some travelers are optimistic that they’ll get on a flight out of town tonight but the reality is most won’t be going anywhere. He says the few flights currently scheduled for this evening are full so most travelers are going to have to wait until a new flight opens up.
