One of the bigger points surrounding this year’s legislative session is the goal of making Career and Technical Education more affordable. Senate Majority Leader Tim Rave says the goal is to financially help high school students who have the desire to also take courses of a CTE program.
"Dual credits for the CTE’s, for the technical academies we have, like in Sioux Falls. To allow students to leverage those dual credits at the $40 an hour rate instead of the higher university rate," Rave says.
Rave says legislation like this would help businesses because it would motivate more students to get technical education. The Senate Majority leader says this in turn would give students a skill set for jobs with South Dakota businesses. State democrats also agree with making the CTE programs more affordable to those in high school with the desire to take technical courses.
