Flooding in Eastern South Dakota caused many roads to close. Highway officials in Minnehaha, Lincoln, and Turner County are still out assessing road damage. Lionel Avilla is the Turner County’s Highway Superintendent. He says crews have been out all night, and he wants people to heed the warning signs about road closures.
“Yes there are quite a bit down by Centerville area. I would advise no travel just because it might look ok on top of the asphalt, but it might be eight out on the shoulder,” says Avilla.
Avilla says he has not seen anything like this in his time as Turner County’s Highway Superintendent.
Highway officials warn what looks like a small puddle across the road could be a wash out with a deep chasm.
