$500K For SD Homeless Shelters

Domestic violence and homeless shelters in South Dakota are getting $513,761 in federal grants. Twenty different shelters applied for and are receiving federal money. Leaders can use the funds for renovations, everyday operations and homeless prevention efforts.

The South Dakota Housing Development Authority distributes the grants. Mark Lauseng is the executive director.

"Our purpose is to provide decent, safe and sanitary housing whether it’s a first-time homebuyer or a homeless person, just to help them out," Lauseng says. "It’s the whole whatever function we can perform throughout the state, any type of housing services we can provide."

Lauseng says the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development funds called Emergency Solutions Grants support shelters and emphasizes work to keep people from becoming homeless. The individual grants range from $5,000 to nearly $70,000.
