A national transportation group says South Dakota’s roads and bridges are deteriorating and a major contributing factor is lack of funding. Researchers for TRIP say numbers from local reports and studies show the state’s roads and bridges continue to break down.
39 percent of South Dakota’s county roads are failing. 28 percent of township roads are in poor condition or closed. Although just two percent of the state roadways are currently in poor condition, researchers say that number could be a quarter of all state highways a decade from now. State lawmakers in Pierre are considering transportation issues this session. Senate Bill 1 contains tax and fee increases to fund road and bridge repair.
TRIP's director of research and policy, Rocky Moretti, joined Dakota Midday and discussed the report on South Dakota's roads. You can read the report here.
