Joshua Houy is a professor in the Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice at the University of South Dakota. He says the "war on drugs" and other public policies contribute more to racial disparities in the legal system than relationships between citizens and law enforcement. He's lecturing on the topic "Historical and Present Racial Disparities in the U.S. Criminal Justice System" on Monday, March 20, at 6:30 p.m. at Black Hills State University – part of the Rapid City Speaker Series.
The South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations (SDAHO) says some 25,000 South Dakotans could lose their health insurance during the 2018 fiscal year. That's if the current GOP healthcare overall is implemented as currently written. Dirk Lammers, with SDAHO, joins us to talk about the potential impact of the American Healthcare Act.
Four members of the Washington High School Varsity Show Choir (Sioux Falls) join us. Curtis Cornish, Bailey Banwart, Austin Schoenbeck, and Jamie Bitz talk about the regional show choir competition "Best of Show" and the blood, sweat, and tears that exemplifies performing arts in South Dakota.
SDPB's Kevin Woster writes about topics ranging from South Dakota state politics to hunting and fishing in the Sunshine State. You can binge read his blog at SDPB.org/Woster. Today he joins us to discuss passing judgment in politics and personal life, as well as challenging questions about the long-term impact of protests at the Dakota Access Pipeline construction site.
