Today, Ron Tschetter lives in Rapid City. Prior to his time hunting and fishing in the Black Hills, however, one of his leadership roles was serving as Director of the U.S. Peace Corps. He was only the third director in Peace Corps history to have also been a Peace Corps volunteer. Tschetter was confirmed as director in 2006. Under his leadership, the organization experienced a 30-year high in volunteer numbers. This morning Ron Tschetter spoke at the Numad Group's Morning Fill Up at the Garage in Rapid City. Wayne Carney is Executive Director of the South Dakota High School Activities Association. He recently announced his retirement. He'll move on the next adventure at the end of the current school year. He's a graduate of the University of South Dakota. He served students and student athletes in communities small and large before talking the helm of the Activities Association in 2001.
A uranium mining company, Powertech, has spent more than a decade seeking permits to extract uranium from the Inyan Kara aquifer in the Southern Black Hills near Edgemont. The Environmental Protection Agency just wrapped up several hearings in and around the Black Hills on permits for the project. SDPB's Lee Strubinger has the report.
