In The Moment ... Remembering The Battle Of Greasy Grass

In The Moment ... June 26, 2017 Show 122 Hour 2

This weekend marked the 141st anniversary of the The Battle of Greasy Grass, also known as the Battle of Little Bighorn. We begin hour two of In the Moment by putting the battle into context. First, author and Black Hills State University instructor Donovin Sprauge sat down with us last year at this time. He's a family descendant of both Crazy Horse and Chief Hump. He's working on a book about the two men. Donovin Sprague is also an archivist with the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe.

The battle, which occurred along the Little Bighorn River in eastern Montana Territory, was the most significant action of the Great Sioux War of 1876.  While reading material about the battle is abundant, historian Todd Harburn covers one of the lesser-known stories in his new book, "A Surgeon with Custer at the Little Big Horn: James DeWolf's Diary and Letters, 1876." Prairie Public's Ashley Thornberg spoke with Todd Harburn last Monday.  He explains what's different about his book.

For nearly 50 years, De Smet, South Dakota, has been the home of the Laura Ingalls Wilder pageant, attracting tourists from around the world. In 1994, broadcaster Chuck Anderson brought his radio broadcast to DeSmet. Now the archives of those conversations live online. Find them on the SDPB website. Go to SDPB.org/imagesofthepast and click on the Personalities with Chuck Anderson link.
