In The Moment ... June 27, 2017 Show 123 Hour 1
Governor Dennis Daugaard has declared today Post Traumatic Stress Awareness Day in the state of South Dakota. Coming up during our first hour, we talk with veterans and service providers about trauma and healing. About 7 or 8 out of every 100 Americans will have PTSD at some point in their lives. For veterans, those numbers rise. How do you know when you need help? What if someone you love is suffering? What happens when PTSD turns violent?
Today, we talk about treatment options and how healing from trauma can heal an entire community.
First, we welcome South Dakota's Secretary of Veteran Affairs, Larry Zimmerman.
Dr. Kari Leiting is a psychologist with the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls. She specializes in PTSD treatment and joins us in our studio for a conversation about treatment options, including a look at prolonged exposure therapy.
Erin Bultje is a veteran services officer in South Dakota. She heads South Dakota Joining Forces, which helps community members across the state access resources they need for healing from PTSD.
