Schools in South Dakota hope to prepare students to seamlessly take their next step, to a higher grade or to enter the work force.
But South Dakota is one of a hand full of states that does not have a state funded and administered pre-school programs to prepare children for the first step into kindergarten.
Research shows that children can be more successful in a pre-school program with guidelines to coordinate a quality early learning experience. Preschools in the state can set their own curriculum path that may, or may not, align with kindergarten.
With more parents working and more children in preschools, educators and legislators are developing resources for preschools to improve their services. This was a recent topic on South Dakota Focus with Stephanie Rissler. SDPB's Larry Rohrer has this summary of the conversation.
