Drought Absent For Wide Swath Of South Dakota

United States Drought Monitor

University of Nebraska-Lincoln

This week's U.S. Drought Monitor map from the University of Nebraska shows good news for many counties in South Dakota.

Brad Adams with the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls says his forecast area is not struggling with precipitation.

"The latest update, that was yesterday, May 24th, shows that our area, here in Eastern South Dakota and parts of Southwest Minnesota and Northwest Iowa, are not under abnormally dry conditions or drought status."

He says the forecast for the next several days does show chances for rain but not enough to cause widespread flooding.

"You know, it doesn't look like it's going to be too active. We do have a 6-10 day outlook from the Climate Prediction Center that indicates there will be an above normal chance of precipitation throughout much of South Dakota leading into the beginning of June. That said, certainly we aren't looking at any kind of flooding rain...so as long as we don't have get a persistent rainfall event, we should be fairly good shape and not too many concerns with flooding."

Adams says an area of moderate drought persists in West River from the North Dakota border to areas near the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
