Juneteenth With Derrick Robinson & Mark Blackburn

In The Moment … June 18, 2020 Show 841 Hour 1

On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers, led by General Gordan Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to proclaim that slaves were now free human beings with the right to determine the circumstances of their own lives. Juneteenth is a nationwide observance as we recognize the end of slavery and examine the legacy of racism and enslavement in our daily lives.

Locally, events recognizing Juneteenth have moved online this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Establishing Sustainable Connections has gathered community leaders for the event and their hope is that everybody who takes part in the online conversation around Freedom Day will have a positive experience and use it as an opportunity to learn.

Among the speakers are Derrick Robinson, an Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership at the University of Memphis, and Mark Blackburn, Dean of Students at Augustana University.
