Investigators say a fatal home explosion in central South Dakota was caused by a gas leak.
Three people were killed on the May 24 when an explosion destroyed a home near Fort Pierre.
The Stanley County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement released Wednesday the explosion was likely caused by gas from the home’s liquid petroleum system leaking into the basement. That's the result of an investigation by several agencies including the State Fire Marshal's Office and the Division of Criminal Investigation.
The damaged components of the gas delivery system are undergoing lab examination and the investigation is continuing pending lab analysis, authorities said.
It’s still unclear what ignited the gas.
The incident has been ruled accidental.
