The city of Aberdeen has a new newspaper of record.
The Aberdeen City Council passed a resolution Monday naming the Aberdeen Insider as the council’s official newspaper.
This means the outlet receives a contract with the city to publish its legal announcements. The new contract takes effect at the end of July.
The Aberdeen Insider is an independent newspaper founded in 2023. It replaces Gannett-owned Aberdeen American News. The Insider publishes a weekly newspaper available for free at businesses around town. It also has subscription services where it offers online content or home newspaper delivery for a fee.
This comes weeks after the Sioux Falls City Council made a similar move. It replaced its longtime paper of record – the Argus Leader, also owned by Gannett – with The Dakota Scout. The Scout, which was founded in 2022, has a similar newspaper model to the Aberdeen Insider.
