Forced as a child out of Minnesota following the 1862 Dakota War, Charles Eastman began his formal education in Flandreau. He went on to become the first licensed Native American physician in the United States.

With origins in the 1870s as a Presbyterian mission school, today's Flandreau Indian School is one of just four remaining federally funded and operated off-reservation boarding schools for Native American students in the U.S.
