History 605 S4 Ep 12: Sorting through the Fassbender Collection

Richard Carlson comes on the show to update us on a collection of early and mid-20th century photographs showing the life and history in the Black Hills. The towns of Spearfish, Deadwood, and Lead went together to preserve and make available a large collection of photos taken by Joseph and George Fassbender. This father and son owned business recorded a great deal of life in the Black Hills - everything from weddings and graduations, to the rodeos, tourist attractions, news events, local personalities, and the visits of Hollywood stars and Presidents that make the Black Hills unique. Carlson shares how he's organizing, identifying, and making the photos available to historians, collectors, and anyone else who might be looking for a certain image. After listening, check out the "Historic Black Hills Studios" to see the part of the collection that's now online.
