History 605 S4 Ep 13: The Ghost Dance's "Phantom Storm."

The US Government's response to the Ghost Dance has been the subject of many books. In this episode, we discuss those events with Norman Matteoni, author of a new book, "A Phantom Storm: Sitting Bull, America, and the Ghost Dance." Norm asks, why the Ghost Dance was seen as such a threat when even US Army commanders did not think it would amount to much? He tells the story of how the media, Pine Ridge, and Standing Rock's Indian Agents responded to the Ghost Dance in ways that sent events down a disastrous road. It's an important book explaining how the situation boiled over into tragedy. For copies of the book see: A Phantom Storm — South Dakota Historical Society Press (sdhspress.com)
