Our guest is Chrystal Mensch-Nelson, Director of the Mead Museum in Yankton, SD. I hope you enjoy our conversation about their current exhibit of a rare Jefferson Peace Medal. Each president from George Washington to Benjamin Harrison had peace medals made with their image on them. They then gave them as gifts to tribes that frequently viewed them as symbols of friendship. The peace medals then enabled peaceful trade between the United States and the various tribes. The origins of this particular peace medal are a bit murky, but it was possibly given to a tribe during the Lewis & Clark expedition in 1804. This peace medal is on loan and will be displayed at the Mead Museum for several months. For more on the Mead, see: Mead Museum | Yankton, SD.
