'Giants in the Earth' endures as award-winning opera

On today's show...

No one has heard the Pulitzer Prize-winning opera "Giants in the Earth" performed live. That's changing thanks to the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra.

Maestro Delta David Gier previews the April 26 and 27 concerts bringing the literary classic to the stage. He says the piece breathes life into the sounds of America (1:00 to 26:51).

Plus, readers of "Giants in the Earth" share their impressions.

Craig Howe, Ph.D., is founder and director of the Center for American Indian Research and Native Studies (CAIRNS). He picks up the book for the first time and discusses the book's relationship with the land (26:51 to 39:37).

And Bishop Constanze Hagmaier looks at what we can bring from immigrant stories of the past into our present (39:37 to 49:19).

Lori Walsh is the host and senior producer of "In the Moment."
