A proposed carbon pipeline project has South Dakotans split ahead of the November election. Residents are voting on a measure opponents say is government consolidation for corporate benefit. Those backing the law say it's designed to protect landowners should the pipeline get approved.

South Dakota residents have about a week left to comment on a draft explanation for a proposed initiated measure regarding property tax assessments. Attorney General Marty Jackley released the draft explanation Oct. 21, and residents have until close of business on Oct. 31 to comment.

For months, the community of Sturgis has been wrapped in governmental turmoil. Now, two more city officials have tendered their resignations, including the mayor and a councilmember.

As research continues to demonstrate the need for youth mental health services, some schools work to fill the need. Now the Rapid City Area School District has received nearly $3.4 million grant to address service gaps in its schools.

Deep in the Black Hills, the local chapter of the Norbeck Society has put together something of a field trip—forest management 101. Covering everything from prescribed burns to tree thinning, it was a chance for members of the environmentalist group to learn about the general health of the forest.
