On today's update...

The South Dakota Supreme Court is considering a case involving an issue that has been in the news frequently — eminent domain. However, this case doesn’t involve carbon pipelines. State V. Gustafson is an eminent domain case orbiting the construction of highways and is reflective of the skepticism some South Dakotans have expressed regarding the practice.

The Rapid City Police Department is investigating the death of a man in a makeshift encampment under the I-190 bridge as a homicide.

Although Canada has not yet put a tariff on American corn, some worry about whether it will be included in the next round of retaliatory tariffs. The country is laying out all options. Some of South Dakota’s top exports to Canada are on the chopping block.

Gov. Larry Rhoden is signing several bills addressing South Dakota election laws. One bill requires voters to live in South Dakota for 30 consecutive days to be able to register to vote.

Elections are set for Rapid City’s Common Council positions. Two wards have no opposition and are presumably easy carries for longtime incumbents, though other races have multiple candidates.

South Dakota Mines hasn’t hosted a speech team in a half-century, but its legacy is living on through a new tournament. Named for a legendary coach, advocate alumni say it’s the first step toward reestablishing a Hardrocker speech team.
