June Tax Collections Up From Last Year

One state lawmaker says the $29 million increase in sales tax collections in June borders on tremendous.

That’s when comparingJune collectionsfrom this year to 2019.

Republican State Senator John Wiik is vice-chair of the appropriations committee.

He says he's cautiously optimistic about the future of the state under the coronavirus pandemic.

“We didn’t close. We’re holding in there. We’re doing really well,” Wiik says. “Our businesses found ways to adapt and move forward. We’re looking like our economy is—at least—holding it’s own. We’re meeting our expectations even though we’re in an unprecedented business climate.”

Retail sales, building and garden supplies, and food store sales are all up. Restaurant and bar collections are down by almost 25 percent. Gas and auto sales are also down.
