Voting Preparations

With less than one week before the 2012 Election, the South Dakota Secretary of State Elections Office is busy making last minute preparations. Secretary of State Jason Gant says his office is  prepared for Election Day after working with county auditors and election officials across the state. He says his office is especially excited for a new initiative implemented this year.

“The new initiative we have for this election is Yankton County is going to be using the electronic poll books and the vote centers, says Gant. So we’re very excited to bring Yankton into the electronic poll book and vote center program, along with Hyde, Potter, and Sully Counties. With vote centers, you can vote anywhere within the county so we are very excited to allow the citizens of Yankton to have that opportunity to vote anywhere in their county.”

Gant says he hopes initiatives like these, a push for more absentee ballots, and good weather will help lift South Dakota past the 70 percent voter turnout mark.  He also says voters should remember to bring any type of photo identification with them, including a driver’s license, tribal license, or college ID, to cast their ballot.
