South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley is announcing his legislative agenda for the upcoming session.
Most of his proposed legislation include increasing penalties for making and distributing meth in South Dakota.
He says the meth epidemic is getting worse. Jackley says its impacting communities, families, the workforce and healthcare system in South Dakota.
“So, something has to be done about it. If you look at the main problem, meth is being distributed into our state from the southern border," Jackley says. "So, what I’m proposing are stronger, enhance penalties for the manufacture and distribution of meth and mandatory sentences. Because I want to make sure we’re sending that message to dealers and drug traffickers that South Dakota is off limits. That if they are going to traffic here in South Dakota they’re going to get caught and there’s going to be significant consequences.”
Other bills Attorney General Jackely is proposing are increasing human trafficking laws and improving the state’s sex offender registry. Another proposal would require reporting of any online security breech where consumer personal information is obtained.
The 2018 legislative session starts next week.
