Farm Bureau Says They're Watching Tariff Negotiations With China

The president of the South Dakota Farm Bureau says they’re not overreacting to proposed Chinese tariffs on soybeans just yet.

Scott VanderWal says President Donald Trump has a unique method of negotiating, which he says could be about larger world issues.

He says the administration might use tariff’s to get countries to the negotiating table.

However, VanderWal says they’re working to make the administration understands the severe consequences if negotiations go wrong.

“We would say that now is not the time to take a chance at disrupting trade,” Vanderwal says. “There are signs that the ag economy is turning around, but we’ve got a long way before we can say this is over. And, to do anything that would disrupt trade could put us back on our heals really severely, in terms of a recovery.”

Vanderwal says disruptions to international trade are dangerous to agriculture in the current economic situation.

On Wednesday, Senator John Thune says he doesn’t believe a trade war is healthy for anyone. He says more targets for retaliation in a trade war are American agriculture.
