State Senators are passing one of three bills that removes permit requirements for carrying a concealed pistol.
State Senator Brock Greenfield is the prime sponsor of Senate Bill 47.
He says given the number of permit-less carry bills… and opposition to the idea… this legislation will evolve as session continues.
“Frankly, I do think—in fairness to some of the people who have historically opposed this bill—the tone is different this year,” Greenfield says. “There seems to be a desire to do something. I think that maybe a lot of that has to do with the fact that they recognize that this governor has a different outlook as far as gun laws go. Maybe they just want to put their fingerprint on it before it goes to her desk for her consideration."
The SB 47 moves to the house by a vote of 21 to 13.
Both the South Dakota Sheriffs Association and States Attorneys Association oppose the bill.
