In The Moment ... August 27, 2020 Show 890 Hour 2
Last night South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem spoke at the Republican National Convention. She praised President Trump, called for Americans to reject the idea of a class of elite experts, and she talked about the U.S. Constitution. She also referenced a speech by Abraham Lincoln. (More on that later.) We're going to play Governor Noem's remarks for you (they last just over five minutes) and follow with an interview Governor Noem had this morning with NPR's Steve Inskeep.
First, the speech. Governor Noem wore blue. Her dress featured a pin with the South Dakota state seal. Like other speakers, she talked directly into the camera while she stood in an empty auditorium. There was no crowd for those speakers, so in this case, you won't hear applause. Here she is as she takes the podium.
Governor Noem didn't mention South Dakota in her speech. She didn't talk about our pandemic response or the recent rise in COVID-19 cases, particularly after the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. In a few moments, we hear from Lee Strubinger. He reports on his efforts to get a COVID-19 test after he covered large events for SDPB.
But first ... NPR's Steve Inskeep interviewed Governor Noem on today's Morning Edition. He asked her about Sturgis, and he also asked her to clarify her reference to the words of Abraham Lincoln.
