There’s widespread reaction to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that overturns Roe v. Wade. In South Dakota, abortion is now illegal except to save the life of the mother.
The high court's decision has resulted in a range of responses. Some people are concerned those who seek abortions and their providers will now be criminalized.
Anndell Wubben expects to see a massive pushback in South Dakota from women who are not typically political.
“People are angry. People are upset. People are waffling between, ‘Do I cry because it's wet hot anger, or am I so angry that I need to get up and I need to do something.’ And I think either way people are gonna do something. I mean people are surprised, they are aghast, they are upset," said Wubben.
Sioux Falls resident Jane Veerman shares those disheartened feelings.
“I just think it's a tragedy — especially in this state where they don't let us make up our own minds about anything. And this just seems like one more blow. Frankly, it's embarrassing," said Veerman.
Other people support the high court’s ruling. Mary Kelly says it is the right move.
“Oh, I'm thrilled with the decision that they are allowing the states to make their decision as far as abortion,” she said.
South Dakota's trigger law prohibits abortion except to save the mother. The law says anyone who provides an abortion is guilty of a Class 6 felony, punishable by two years in prison, a $4,000 fine, or both.
