Memorial services for former Gov. Harvey Wollman will be held Sunday and Monday.
A visitation is scheduled from 1-7 p.m. Sunday at the Kuhler Funeral Home in Huron. Wollman’s funeral service will be Monday morning at First Presbyterian Church in Huron, followed by his burial at Ebenezer Mennonite Brethren Church Cemetery in Doland.
His family has declined to hold a state memorial.
Wollman passed away Oct. 18 at the Huron Regional Medical Center in Huron at the age of 87.
He was born May 14, 1935, in Frankfurt, South Dakota, and eventually attended college at Bethel College in St. Paul and Huron College, where he met his wife, Anne Geigel. They were married in 1958.
He then served in the U.S. Army for two years in Frankfurt, Germany, before becoming a U.S. history and U.S. government teacher and debate coach at Doland High School.
Wollman ran as a Democrat for the State Senate in 1968 and was elected to three consecutive terms. He was chosen as Senate Minority Leader, then later Majority Leader.
He was elected as lieutenant governor for Gov. Richard Kneip in 1974. When Kneip was appointed U.S. ambassador of Singapore in 1978, Wollman was appointed governor and held the position until 1979. He was the first lieutenant governor to succeed to governorship in South Dakota.
Wollman was the sole sponsor of the bill that created the South Dakota Investment Council. He was also the prime sponsor of the bill creating the 4-year medical school at the University of South Dakota and served on the State Constitutional Revision Commission.
He was inducted to the South Dakota Hall of Fame in 2017.
