Former U.S. Congressman James Abourezk has entered hospice care.
His family issued a statement saying he was released from a Sioux Falls hospital to receive hospice care at his home.
Abourezk represented South Dakota in the U.S. House from 1971 to 1973, and in the U.S. Senate from 1973 until he retired from politics in 1979.
He co-authored several major pieces of legislation, including the Indian Child Welfare Act.
Abourezk turns 92 on Friday.
