The idea of cutting taxes has been top of mind for lawmakers as South Dakota sits on a hefty budget surplus.
But, with just one week left of the 2023 legislative session, it's still not clear what, if any, taxes will get reduced.
Three proposals - a grocery sales tax cut backed by Gov. Kristi Noem, a general sales tax cut backed by House Republicans, and a property tax cut favored by Senate Republicans - have competed for legislative air. The grocery sales tax plan appears to have failed this session, leaving two proposals standing.
Political jockeying over the bills was evident Thursday when the Senate discussed HB 1137, the property tax proposal. One Democratic lawmaker even tried reviving part of the grocery sales tax cut, professing his plan is more conservative than those backed by his Republican counterparts.
