All of Gov. Kristi Noem's vetoes were upheld after the legislature returned to Pierre Monday for veto day.
Lawmakers voted on four bill vetoed by the governor. None received the two-thirds majority needed to override the veto.
House Bill 1193 would have updated the Uniform Commercial Code, which is a set of rules that governs interstate commerce. Noem vetoed it over concerns how it regulated cryptocurrencies. The House voted 30 to 37 to sustain the veto.
The House sustained the governor's veto on HB 1209 in a 32 to 35 vote. The bill increased the amount of THC allowed in industrial hemp during processing.
Senate lawmakers upheld Noem's veto on SB 129 in a 20 to 15 vote. The bill would have given teachers the same legal protections as law enforcement officers against violent crime.
The Senate sustained the veto against SB 108 in a 5 to 30 vote. Known as the "sip and spit" bill, it would have allowed college students under age 21 taking part in brewing classes to taste alcohol.
Noem vetoed a total of five bills this legislative session. The legislature acted on and failed to override the fifth vetoed bill, a law allowing municipal governments to increase hotel lodging tax, during regular session.
