A tribute for former U.S. Senator Jim Abourezk is being held this weekend.
The gathering is Sunday, May 28 at 1:30 p.m. EST at the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls.
Abourezk passed in his home on February 24. He was 92.
He represented South Dakota in the U.S. House from 1971 to 1973 and in the U.S. Senate from 1973 to 1979. He was known for advocating for underrepresented people such as small farmers, consumers and Native Americans.
He was the first Arab-American U.S. Senator.
The public is invited to attend the tribute.
