Proposal aims to stifle legislature's ability to change ballot measures

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley has released the final explanation for a proposed constitutional amendment limiting lawmakers' ability to change ballot measures.

The measure was brought forth by former Democratic Senate candidate Brian Bengs.

If enacted, the amendment would prohibit the state legislature from repealing or amending ballot measures until seven years after the measures were put into place.

A total of 35,017 signatures must be collected and validated by the Secretary of State’s Office in order for the measure to go on the 2024 general ballot.
