South Dakota classifies xylazine as a controlled substance

Gov. Kristi Noem's office
Gov. Kristi Noem signed several health-related bills, including one classifying xylaxine as a controlled substance, into law during a signing ceremony on Feb. 12, 2024.

Gov. Kristi Noem has put her signature on a bill classifying xylazine as a Schedule 3 controlled substance.

Attorney General Marty Jackley has been a supporter of this re-classification.

Xylazine is typically used in veterinary medicine as a tranquilizer for large animals, like horses. According to Jackley, it’s also started to be used to cut fentanyl.

The new law still allows for the substance to be used and prescribed by veterinarians but establishes legal repercussions for improper use.
