Gov. Kristi Noem has signed HB 1228 in law, allowing official hunting safety garments, like hats or vests, to be fluorescent pink.
The bill was sponsored by a father-daughter legislator duo - Sen. Arch Beal of Sioux Falls and Rep. Jessica Bahmuller of Alexandria.
“I want to congratulate Sen. Arch Beal and Rep. Jessica Bahmuller on this legislation that gives hunters more options for their hunting garments,” said Noem. “I’m looking forward to seeing lots of blaze pink in the fields this pheasant season.”
The law clarifies that anyone using a firearm to hunt big game animals besides mountain lions and turkeys is required to wear a fluorescent orange or pink safety garment on the outside of their other clothing. Previously, only orange was acceptable.
Violation of the law is a class two misdemeanor.
