Group submits signatures for recreational marijuana question on November ballot

South Dakota voters could weigh in on whether to legalize recreational marijuana for the third time in as many elections.

Advocates said they’ve submitted 29,030 signatures to the Secretary of State’s office to place the question on the November ballot.

In 2020, South Dakota voters approved a constitutional amendment that included a framework to legalize recreational marijuana. That was overturned in the courts.

Two years later, voters rejected an initiated measure to legalize cannabis.

Despite a recent recreational marijuana rejection, those with South Dakotans for Better Marijuana Laws want to hear from voters when turnout is typically higher.

“Given the unique history around Amendment A, that the right thing to do is to put it back on the ballot in this presidential election when more South Dakotans will weigh in on the decision,” said Matthew Schweich, executive director of South Dakotans for Better Marijuana Laws. “I think that yields a more legitimate decision and one that reflects where voters really stand.”

Three other ballot questions are in the process of getting confirmed by the Secretary of State’s office, including food tax removal, abortion rights and open primaries.
