South Dakota's Congressional delegation is among a group of Republicans sending President Joe Biden a letter urging the withdrawal of his new student loan forgiveness plan.

The Biden administration published the proposed student loan debt relief rule back in April. It describes guidelines for when the Secretary of Education is allowed to waive partial or all of a borrower’s debt.

The White House estimates more than 27 million borrowers would immediately be eligible for some form of federal student loan waiver.

Sens. Mike Rounds and John Thune, as well as Rep. Dusty Johnsons, signed onto a letter calling the rule “reckless” and “fiscally irresponsible.” Their primary criticism is asking the taxpayer to pay for it.

Seven states are suing the Biden administration over the plan.
