A new agreement between the Justice Department and Bennett County helps Native Americans receive equal voting opportunities.
In July the federal department notified the county it had not made in-person voter registration and absentee voting opportunities equal for Native Americans during South Dakota’s 46-day absentee voting period.
The Justice Department said Native Americans living on Tribal lands in Bennett County disproportionally lack the ability to travel to the county seat in Martin for in-person voting services.
To bring immediate change – the U.S. and Bennett County are establishing a satellite office in Allen to provide more accessible services.
It will be operated by Bennett County.
