The State of South Dakota is looking to sell land next to the developmental center in Redfield.

A bill filed for the state legislature would authorize the sale.

The land is sectioned out into five lots that total 20 acres.

Jenna Howell is general counsel for the Department of Human Services. She said the property used to house four residential buildings on the campus.

“The two oldest buildings were demolished in 1998. The other two buildings—Clark and Meadowview—are still there. But they are no longer in use due to increased efficiency and centralization of services," Howell said. "Selling the property relieves taxpayers of the cost of ongoing maintenance for the two buildings, or any potential demolition costs. Any proceeds from sales would go to the general fund.”

The two remaining facilities have not been in use since the summer of 2021.

Howell said a particular buyer has not been identified because the state has not been authorized to sell the property, yet.
