Republican Secretary of State Monae Johnson says she intends run for the office again in 2026.

Johnson bulldozed her way into the Republican nomination in 2022 by securing the GOP nomination from then-Republican Secretary Steve Barnett at convention.

"It has been the privilege of a lifetime to serve as your Secretary of State," Johnson said in a statement. "Together, we've made significant strides in improving our office, ensuring that South Dakota's elections remain secure and accurate, and supporting our state's vibrant business community. There is more work to be done and I am excited to build on the foundation we've created."

Johnson ran on a platform of securing South Dakota’s election, but has dodged questions about the validity of the 2020 presidential election results.

The Secretary of State oversees state elections, campaign finance filings, business registrations and pistol permits.
