South Dakota lawmakers are advancing a bill aiming to strengthen transparency in public meetings.
The bill is in response to concerns some state commissions and municipal governments aren’t properly following the state’s open meeting laws.
It’s backed by Sen. Tim Reed. The Brookings Republican said many open meeting violations happen simply because the people on these boards aren’t aware of all the rules.
“So you’ll see in the bill that this just asks each governing body that falls under open meeting laws to at least once a year, review the open meeting laws," Reed said. "And the information will be provided by the attorney general.”
No one spoke in opposition to the bill. The Senate Local Government committee unanimously sent it to the Senate floor.
