The state House of Representatives is rejecting a bill that would require cash payments for admission to state school-affiliated events.
Proponents of the bill said allowing cash would have kept financial payments private and created equality for those who don’t use credit and debit.
Opponents said it should be up to local school boards to decide what is best for their districts.
Opponents also argued it could impact state-licensed third-party vendors who only accept online payment – such as the Denny Sanford Premier Center – from agreeing to host high school sporting events.
The bill failed narrowly with 32 voting to pass, 34 against. An effort to revive the bill Monday through an intent to reconsider motion failed.
