The prime sponsor of a bill to prohibit state funding go to the Huron Public School has withdrawn the legislative effort.

Rapid City Republican Rep. Phil Jensen has also resigned as vice chair of House Education.

According to South Dakota Searchlight, Jensen’s bill was in reaction to a tip about the district’s bathroom policy.

State Democrats decry the maneuver as an abuse of the legislative process.

The South Dakota Capitol has become a routine venue for bills targeting transgender residents over the years.

This year several bills aimed at transgender people have been introduced. One creates a class two misdemeanor for individuals who urinate and defecate in school and government-owned buildings who don’t meet the definition of that bathroom’s designation. Others require parental consent for students to receive counselling and use of a different name in schools.
