Gov. Larry Rhoden signed the first bill into law of his term as governor.
SB 7 bans any local government in the state from implementing sanctuary city laws.
That includes granting undocumented immigrants legal citizenship status.
This is the first bill to become law in the 100th Legislative Session.
Rhoden said it keeps the state in line with federal policies.
“This bill reiterates South Dakota’s respect for the rule of law,” Rhoden said. “Our state has been negatively impacted by the unlawful and uncontrolled illegal immigration. Thankfully, President Trump is putting a stop to that. This bill is a step in the right direction towards keeping South Dakota strong, safe, and free.”
