Legislative panel defeats legal immunity bills

A legislative committee is rejecting a pair of legal immunity bills.

One bill would have provided protections for officers making arrests while off-duty. Law enforcement groups opposed the measure, saying sufficient legal protection already exists.

The other would have shielded church security volunteers from lawsuits, even in cases involving deadly force. The South Dakota Trial Lawyers group argued against it, saying the bill lacked training requirements and could create new legal problems.

SDBA reports the House Judiciary Committee killed both bills Monday.
