Gov. Larry Rhoden has signed a bill aimed at reducing crashes involving an infamous Pierre bridge.

The bill slightly adjusts Highway 14’s official route through Pierre to avoid passing under the viaduct bridge on North Euclid Avenue.

That low-clearance bridge has been the site of dozens of crashes over the years, as semi-trucks, RVs and other tall vehicles tried and failed to slip under the bridge.

Many drivers blamed their GPS systems for routing them to the bridge.

The bill’s backers say changing Highway 14’s route should ease that GPS mapping issue and reduce the number of large vehicles challenging the bridge.
