State legislative budget analysts are adopting revenue targets that Gov. Larry Rhoden describes as a rounding error to December’s proposed budget.
Officials expect sales tax collections remain for the rest of this fiscal year and next fiscal year. However, they anticipate other ongoing revenue will be up.
Gov. Rhoden said there’s little wiggle room in the budget.
“We are at a zero-sum game,” Rhoden said. “If we reduce cuts someplace else, we have to increase cuts for somebody else. So, that’s where we’re at.”
Now that revenue targets have been adopted, the appropriations committee will shift into crafting the state budget.
The administration’s proposed budget included many cuts, including to SDPB, the state library, building maintenance and more.
The state is also trying to finance a new men’s prison, which many describe as the largest purchase in state history.
