The state House of Representatives approves two bills that change South Dakota election law.
HB 1169 mandates petition gatherers to collect signatures from each Senatorial district for constitutional amendments. Current law only sets a flat number of signatures which can be gathered anywhere in the state.
Proponents say it ensures broader geographic representation in the amendment process.
Representatives also voted 47-22 to advance HB 1066. It requires citizens to stay in South Dakota for 30 consecutive days to be eligible to vote.
Both bills pass the House and head to the Senate.
